Democracy Broken For Democrats

Democrats give the impression that democracy is broken if they don’t get what they want.  As recently as this week, even after democrats seize the White House, Prop 8 is becoming a perfect example of what the public wants, not just the liberals.  Any time democracy is broken, it’s time to take it to the courts, and that’s exactly what gay rights groups are doing now.

But attorneys for several gay rights groups have challenged the Prop. 8 victory, filing legal papers calling on the state Supreme Court to reject the same-sex marriage ban as an overreaching use of the public’s initiative power.

An overreaching use of public’s power? Is that not what democracy is all about?  I support the ban on gay marriage, but above that I support the idea that a state should be able to choose for itself.  In this case Prop 8 was upheld and the banning of gay marriages stands, but this is not a reason to become up in arms.  Now is the time for individuals on both sides of the fence to appreciate the country they now live in, where majority rules and put their own agendas aside.

I believe state laws should not be set by courts, but rather by majority vote.  I would be making this argument whether I agreed with the passing law or not.  However, my stance would not waiver in regards to the strength of democracy just because the other side won.
